Victoria is the oldest town in western Canada, In 1843, the Hudson's Bay Company established a trading post there, and named it after Queen Victoria. The city grew rapidly with the 1858 gold rush in Fraser Valley, and became the primary port of entry to Vancouver Island and British Columbia, two individual colonies at the time. The colonies ultimately joined together, and Victoria became the capital. It became the capital city of the province of British Columbia in 1871, as soon as the province joined the Canadian Confederation.
Victoria kept its title as the largest town in BC before the Transcontinental railway was made and Vancouver quickly became the hub of business and commerce for the region.
