Fat Loss Plans: Using the Buddy System

Fat Loss Programs No Comments »

Have you heard the story about the child trying to move the boulder while his father watches? The kid pushes and shoves with all his might, but the rock hardly moves an inch. He finally turns to his father and tells him that he can’t do it, that the job is impossible.

His father tells him not to quit, that he hasn’t yet used all the resources available to him. The boy responds that he has pushed his hardest, using all his strength, and still can’t move the boulder. It is just too much. Finally the father looks at him and says, “You didn’t ask me to help you yet.”

Sometimes trying to lose weight can feel like trying to move that impossible boulder. You figuratively push and shove with all your might. You throw yourself into a strenous workout program, count every calorie that comes near your mouth, read all the latest diet books. But no matter how much you try, you find sticking to a diet and workout program impossibly hard. Eventually you give up.

But there is one technique that you probably haven’t tried, one that could push you over the hump: using the fat loss buddy system. That means putting together your own personal support group of friends, family, and acquaintances. The best support group are people who are positive, who genuinely care about you, and who also could benefit from losing weight. This kind of group can positively reinforce everyone’s desire to lose weight, offer encouragement, and help you get through setbacks that would have derailed you.

Here are some tips to help you build that support group:

1. Find an exercise buddy who will commit to work out with you on a regular basis. If you can’t find someone among your regular friends and family, join a gym and look for someone who has the same goals as you. Quite often, having someone to meet and workout with is the big difference between failure and sticking it out. This is especially true in the beginning, when your muscles will be sore as you start doing activities you haven’t done regularly in the past. Getting through this time is greatly aided when you have someone else to share complaints and sympathy with. You might even find that you’ve made a wonderful new friend in the process!

2. Make sure your family is a help and not a hindrance. Don’t let them sabotage your diet efforts or belittle you. Unfortunately, many families can do more harm than help when you are trying to change your behaviors or correct bad habits.

3. Think about joining a fat loss group, such as Weight Watchers. Often, the best support group you will find is a group of people who are trying to make the same changes that you are. It can help a lot to have people to share your successes and failures with, plus you will hear many tips you probably hadn’t thought of before. You may also find people in this group who will agree to be your exercise buddy. Best of all, you’ll get the encouragement you need to stick it out when nothing seems to be happening.

10 Ways to Take the Drudgery out of Exercise

Fat Loss Programs No Comments »

Very few of us are unaware of the benefits of exercising - particularly when we are trying to lose weight. Just about every doctor and healthy organization in the country has endorsed the importance of exercise in maintaining health. A half an hour a day of moderate physical activity is the key to better health and easier weight loss. The most healthy diet in the world won’t take off as much weight if you don’t add exercise to the mix.

But for many people, the thought of exercise is about as exciting as getting a root canal. It can seem boring, like another chore we don’t have time for in our busy day, even hard and painful.

Perhaps the problem is the activities you think of as “exercise.” Here are 10 activities that you probably won’t think of first when someone tells you to get more exercise:

1. If you have children, go outside and play a rousing game of tag with them. This will make exercising a family activity that is not only fun, but something that everyone participates in on a regular basis. You’d be surprised at how many calories you’ll burn without it seeming like work. Besides having a lot of fun, your kids will remember the times you share with them for the rest of their lives.

2. Make walking through favorite places a regular part of the time you give to yourself. Walking for 30 minutes at a moderate pace will burn 450 calories and you’ll feel great. Wear comfortable shoes and try to vary the places you walk. If you love to shop, go to the mall and window shop while you walk. Or take a walk in your local park. If you have a dog, you have a ready-made companion to share your walks with.

3. Get an exercise partner. If you have a friend who is also trying to lose weight, you can help each other, plus enjoy your friendship at the same time. You are both more likely to stick to your exercise plan if you have a daily exercise date with someone you enjoy sharing time with.

4. Get a mini-trampoline and let your inner child out to play! Mini-trampolines are inexpensive, easy to set up, and you can store them in small spaces. If the weather is bad, you can bring it into the living room and work out while you watch the news or your favorite program. Mini-trampolines provide you with a low impact surface on which to bounce, dance, and have fun.

5. Take up a new active hobby. Do you realize that gardening is great exercise? You can actually burn more calories from a half hour of energetic gardening then you will from a brisk walk.

6. Go swimming at your local club, pool, or YMCA. Annual memberships at your local Y are very inexpensive compared to most fitness clubs. They even have financial aid and scholarships available. Swimming is a great fitness activity for people of all ages. It gets your heart rate up, but puts very low stress on your joints. During a hot summer, it can be a very fun and pleasant activity as well.

7. Take an exercise class. When you turn exercise into a social activity, it becomes a lot more fun and gives you another place to meet new people. You will find classes available for all age groups and skill levels. There are also many different types, such as aerobic dancing, kick boxing, step classes, and aerobic jazz. Another benefit is that when you have to pay for an activity, you are much more likely to use it.

8. Go dancing. A half hour to an hour of dancing can burn more calories than running, and it’s a lot more fun! This is something you can do on a regular basis with your spouse, boyfriend or girlfriend, or your friends.

9. Take a bike ride. If you don’t live far from where you work, you might even consider riding your bike to work several times a week. Or riding to the store. Even slow bicycling can burn a lot of calories. Plus, you’ll use muscles that you don’t regularly use in other aerobic activities, such as walking.

10. Challenge yourself to reach different goals. Set fitness or exercise goals for yourself and then strive to meet them. You might set up new goals for yourself every week. Exercise does not have to mean drudgery, or doing the same activity every day until you’re sick of it. Make a list of many different activities that you enjoy, and then pick a different one every day. Find new ways to burn extra calories, such as using the stairs instead of the elevator. Or parking at the far end of the parking lot so you can walk more. Above all, make it fun and you’ll do it regularly!

Don’t Lose Sight of Nutrition When You Diet!

Easy Weight Loss Tips No Comments »

If you have started a new diet plan it is very important that you don’t lose sight of the nutritional supplements your body needs to thrive. Restrictive diets in particular may lack all the necessary vitamins and minerals that you require. Many of these diet plans emphasize one food group in particular, restricting others that may contain much-needed nutrients.

When you think about dieting, you probably have the idea that you have to cut back on calories, forcing your body to burn up some of the fat that it has stored, thus causing weight loss. This is very true, but what you may not realize is that the body won’t necessarily get all the fuel it needs for health that way. There are a number of nutrients that can’t be stored by the body. If your diet plan doesn’t include those nutrients, your health will suffer as a result.

If you are on a restrictive diet where that is the case, it is very important that you also take a nutritional supplement that can fill the gap. At the very least, you should begin taking a good multi-vitamin supplement that will make up for these deficiencies.

Here are some suggestions based on certain kinds of diets for maintaining your body’s nutritional requirements:

1-No matter what diet you are on, begin taking a daily multi-vitamin and mineral supplement.

2-Make sure that you are getting plenty of Vitamin D. Normally, you can get your daily allowance by getting about 20 minutes of sun. But that isn’t practical in the winter, or in climates where you get a lot of cloud cover. So make sure your supplement includes your daily allotment.

3-If you’re on a low carbohydrate, or high protein diet, make sure you still eat plenty of vegetables and fruits. These are rich in antioxidants, which your body needs.

4-If your diet restricts grains, you should definitely be replacing the missing nutrients with a supplement containing Vitamins A, C, B (all of them), E, and K. It should also contain folic acid.

5-If your protein source doesn’t include fish or fish products, make sure you use an Omega 3 Fatty Acids supplement as well.

The best diet plan is a healthy diet, not an overly restricted diet. It will give you a balance of all the essential nutrients that your body needs. If you must use a restrictive diet, it is critical to take plenty of supplements.

The Fastest Weight Loss Diet Requires an Exercise Component

Quickest Way to Lose Weight No Comments »

Most people who want to lose weight want to lose it right now! Not next week, or next month. We want it now. We want it fast, and we want it easy. We don’t want to work for it. Unfortunately, our bodies just don’t work that way. The fastest weight loss diet is simply eating less calories per day, and exercising regularly to burn even more calories. Nothing more, nothing less.

The easiest way to reduce your calorie intake is to change the foods you eat. But you aren’t going to be able to maintain that for a long period of time unless you make sure that you aren’t hungry on this new diet plan. The best way to accomplish that is to eat often and choose the right foods. Eat 3 medium sized meals per day and add 2 snacks. Besides staving off hunger, eating often has been proven to increase your body’s metabolism. And when your metabolism is increased, you will burn more of the calories that you eat.

Include lots of fresh fruits and vegetables in your eating plan. They are high in fiber and they will fill you up. Then drink 6-8 glasses of water as well. This will insure that you aren’t hungry all the time.

Now add the exercise component. If you want to burn more calories, you need to participate in aerobic exercise. Optimally, for 30 minutes a day. You have many choices. One very easy, low impact, low cost choice is to simply start walking. If you have a dog, you have a ready-made aerobic exercise partner who would love to join you! You could also use a treadmill, take regular aerobic dance classes, or even use some of the readily available aerobic tapes and do it right in your home.

The biggest benefit of this “fastest weight loss diet” is that you will be improving your health at the same time as you reduce your waistline!

Losing Weight and Keeping it Off Requires a Lifestyle Change

Easy Weight Loss Tips No Comments »

If you’re like me, losing weight isn’t the hard part. The hard part is keeping it off for a long period of time.

Because that’s also the case for most people, I think we can agree that the real problem is not losing weight. What we really need to address are the lifestyle issues that caused us to gain weight in the first place.

Few of us really need someone to tell us that eating 2 meals a day at our local fast food restaurant will not only put the pounds on us, but is unhealthy as well. We know what a healthy diet looks like. It basically consists of several servings of fruits and vegetables a day, as well as low-fat protein sources, complex carbohydrates, and some dairy products.

We also know that to stay healthy we need to participate in some form of exercise on a regular basis, whether that means walking our dog a couple times a day, doing a full workout at a health club, or bicycling around the block a few times in the evenings. Most of us have been hearing this for years. And if we haven’t, we need to change doctors!

The real problem for most of us is figuring out how to take these 2 healthy activities - a healthy diet and an exercise plan - and incorporate them into our lives. Life in the 21st century is relentlessly busy for most of us. We have myriad responsibilities. Work and family life can consume all our time. Is it no wonder we take the easy way out when it comes to preparing - or not preparing - healthy meals and skimping on our exercise?

The trick is replacing our unhealthy habits with those healthy habits we want to learn without adding so much to our plate that we give up in despair. It may require you to do it in stages. For instance, you might start by riding your bicycle to work 3 times a week. Once that has become a habit that you look forward to, then slowly replace a few of your fast food meals a week with healthier ones. Perhaps you could spend a few minutes in the morning packing your own lunch a few days a week.

By incorporating healthier habits slowly, you give yourself more time and space to make them a part of your life. You know you need to make changes. But it is a lot easier to make major changes in your life if you don’t try to do everything at once. Go slowly, pay attention to how you feel, and incorporate your new habits as you are ready!
