Aren’t you sick of diet tips given by someone who obviously has never had to lose a pound in their entire lives? Or who seems to have all the time and money in the world to devote to their diet? Most of us don’t have all day to spend in the kitchen concocting perfectly nutritious meals with every calorie already perfectly calculated.
Here are some diet tips for those who don’t want to make dieting the primary focus and activity of their life:
1. Be careful when you eat out. Most restaurants serve portions that are enough to feed two truck drivers! This may make their customers think they are getting a good value, but eating the whole thing is going to really pack the pounds on - especially if you eat out a lot. Something I always do is split the meal in half and take the rest home with me for the next day. That gives me two meals for the price of one. Another suggestion is to order from the children’s menu where the portions are smaller.
2. Don’t eat standing up, on your way out the door, in front of the TV, or while you’re driving. If you eat without thinking about what you’re putting in your mouth, you’re going to overindulge. Sit down at the table and actually taste what you’re eating. Eat slowly. Give your body enough time to tell you when you’re full.
3. Stock up on healthy snacks and have them readily available. Put a fruit basket on your dining room table. Keep containers of chopped vegetables, such as carrots and celery, in your refrigerator. Grab these snacks when you’re hungry, not the junk food. You’ll end up feeling more satisfied without packing on the pounds.
4. Find an exercise buddy. You don’t need a gym membership or fancy equipment. It could be as simple as finding someone to take a walk with each day. A dog is one of the best exercise buddies you’ll ever find. They’ll uncomplainingly accompany you on walks in any kind of weather!
5. Use frozen vegetables instead of canned ones. Canned vegetables are generally high in sodium, plus most of the nutritional value has been processed out of them. You can buy large bags of frozen vegetables, then divide them into small zip-lock bags for single servings.
6. Forget about the sodas - even the diet ones. Regular sodas are loaded with sugar and empty calories. Drink flavored water or fruit juice instead.
7. Steam your vegetables instead of boiling them. This will retain all the healthy nutrients and they taste a lot better. You will find that you are more apt to eat them instead of filling up on the high fat foods you want to avoid.
8. Eat 5-6 small regular meals a day. This will keep your metabolism working throughout the day, plus keep you from getting hungry and snacking on unhealthy foods. 3 small regular meals plus several snacks are an easy way to eat healthy and lose weight at the same time.
9. Avoid fried snacks, such as french fries and potato chips. They are loaded with fat and calories and very little nutrition. Instead, grab a piece of fruit or some of the chopped up veggies you are storing for just such times.
10. Drink lots of water. Water is one of the best resources for anyone on a diet. Drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day will help you fill full. On top of that, your body will more easily digest your food and clean out your system. You would be surprised at just how effective this one tip will be in helping you lose weight!
