Unfortunately over the last few years there has been a steady increase in the number of teens who are considered to be overweight or obese.  However, although there are many teenagers who really do need to lose weight there are others who don’t.  However before you decide whether a weight loss diet for teen is the appropriate for your child to do there are some points that you need to consider:

1.  Are they a normal weight?

What you need to do is look at their age, their body type, how fit they are and their height and then look at their weight and see if it falls in to a range which a health care professional would consider to be normal.  You will often find that very fit people weigh more than someone who is unfit (simply because they have increased muscle mass rather than body fat).  Certainly a person’s height, age, genetics and fitness levels will play a major part in what is considered to be the normal weight for them.  So if your teen happens to be a child whose range of weight is normal for who they are then they do not need to go on a weight loss diet.

2.  If they are overweight, so what happens next?

It is important that before your teen starts any sort of weight loss diet program that they visit the doctor or a dietician.  By doing this they will be able to help them set realistic goals as well as offer advice so that they can achieve them in the best possible way.  What is also important is that your teen learns that along with changes to their diet they will also need to start doing some exercise as well.  The best way of thinking about these changes to their life is by getting to thinking of them as a way of getting healthy rather than a way to lose the weight.
